Onions cost 50 to 60 rupees, the government said prices will fall
After adequate supply, onion prices are expected to come down.
New Delhi: In some parts of the country, the retail prices of onion have been increased from 50 to 60 rupees per kg. The government says that this is due to the immediate difference in supply demand and with the arrival of kharif onions, the prices will be reduced by the end of the month. In Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata you are running 50 kg of onions. According to official figures, the price in Chennai is 45 rupees. This is the mood of onion in small towns too.
Agriculture secretary SK Patnaik told PTI- "It is a matter of time. The traders are taking advantage of short-term reductions in supply. But the foundation is strong. "He said that onion production is estimated to be lower in the crop year 2017-18 (July to June), but the total production of onion will be sufficient to meet the domestic needs. After adequate supply, onion prices are expected to come down.
As per the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, due to the decrease of the area, the crop year is expected to fall by 4.5 per cent to 21.4 million tonnes in 2017-18. The production last year was 2.24 million tonnes. Patnaik said that onion prices in the coming days will improve with the increase in onion prices.
PK Gupta, Executive Director of National Horticulture Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF), Nashik said, "In the present time, the arrival of kharif onion is low. By the end of the month, the inward recovery is expected and accordingly, the prices will also improve. "He said that due to low rainfall during the sowing period in the major producing States of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu, sowing area Due to lack of 20 to 25 per cent in the kharif onion production is expected to decrease.
He said that once the arrival of Kharif onion and later on Rabi onion crop market, retail prices will improve itself.
