Mehul's father was a well-known businessman who, in 1966, formed a company in Surat for cutting and polishing diamonds, named Gitanjali. Mehul's two sisters, Gita and Anjali, got the name of the company. At the age of 26, Mehul took over the entire business of Gitanjali and started the first branded jewelery line in 1994.

Between 2001 and 2005, the Gitanjali Group, by the name of constellation, Asmi, Dedmas and Sangani brand, made its market penetration. Between 2006 and 2016, under the leadership of Mehul, Gitanjali bought the retail chain Rogers and Samuel, Italy's Gianti Italia, DIT and valenta brands in America.

When Mehul took over the business of Gitanjali, the turnover of the company was 50 million rupees. Today, the total business of Gitanjali Group has reached $ 2 billion. Geantajali James is 86th in the Fortune 500 list of Indian companies.
